2012 TIGER Discretionary Grants

$500 million was made available for the Secretary of Transportation to make grants on a competitive basis for capital investments in surface transportation infrastructure projects that will have a significant impact on the Nation, a metropolitan area, or a region. Projects eligible for funding include, but are not limited to, highway or bridge projects, public transportation projects, passenger and freight rail, or port infrastructure investments.

This is a highly competitive grant. The SE Connector project provides many of the qualities identified primarily economic development and improved transportation for the metropolitan area. The estimated cost of the SE Connector from SE 14th Street to SE 30th Street is $65 million. The City of Des Moines receiveda $10 million TIGER competitive grant for the Southeast Connector (East MLK Parkway). These funds will assist with construction costs from SE 15th to SE 30th Streets.
